Battery-era models get up to 3 hours of event previews without a plan, while newer wired 3rd-generation models get up to 6 hours of event previews. Live view remains available without a subscription.

Google Home Premium provides 30-day event history on Standard and 60-day event history plus eligible 10-day 24/7 recording on Advanced. Google also says that if the subscription lapses, access to video history and the face library is lost.
This is not evidence that every newer Nest camera is worse. In one important way, Google's newer hardware actually improves the no-subscription tier. The ownership concern is that useful long-term recording remains cloud- and subscription-dependent.
